LUXURY ALWAYS BECOMES NECESSITY

Cell phones, pagers, and any amount of things that you can imagine have been a luxury at one point or another. At one point cell phones were so rare that they were a status symbol, much in the same way as a Commodore 64 or IBM PC JR. Now some two and half decades later we look at cell phones, computers, and just about everything that was once a luxury, as a major need. I remember being a middle school kid and seeing pager as a luxury and seeing pagers become a must a couple of years later.

I remember being in the cool kids club with my NEC pager with a giant screen. There was something special about having the same piece of equipment as a Doctor. I remember my father's pager had no screen, just a speaker, and some buttons on the side.

The fact is that while some luxuries will always remain just that their predecessors while simple were also luxuries. Let's talk about cars for a second, a Ferrari is a luxury but a Ford Model T was one too. Cars were a luxury as well at one point and in some parts of the world they are still luxuries by virtue of cost, taxes, and fuel.

Perhaps the next big necessity will be something cool like a hovercraft or spaceship, maybe a car that can be used as a blender. Life will always have special surprises for us.

UNDERSTAND WHAT IS ONE HIT VERSUS MULTIPLE

This particular entry is not really about a societally relevant topic but it's one that makes me laugh and even cry a little bit inside. I love 80's music but I hate the term one hit wonder because I think it's really used improperly. Let me go ahead and explain what it is I mean and where I am headed.

VH1 constantly used to air specials about one hit wonders and the usual suspects showed up. The Buggles, Haircut 100, Bow Wow Wow, and yes the legendary Taco. To me al of that made sense because it's not like Taco had a smash follow up to "Putting on the Ritz." The truth is that those were all fun one off songs that everyone could enjoy in a nice 80's disco with a lot of flashy lights and mega amounts of gnarly cocaine in the back room. I always had a massive problem with one addition and that was Gary Numan.

What exactly made Gary Numan a one hit wonder? The song cars is apparently the culprit here. I have an issue when you consider that three years before Gary Numan and the Tubeway Army had a hit with are friends electric and were bringing a dark and edgy style music to the world. The songs like " Are Friends Electric" and "Down in the Park" were new and very innovative.

While none of this is really relevant today it is a part of what shaped real music and switched tastes from genres like producer influenced disco to sound and meaning driven styles of music. I would not consider any of that punk music but still it meant something and it's nice to get it right.

Hit the Floor

There is one thing I love about going to nightclubs and that is people watching. I think that going to a club is a wonderful exercise in seeing that small portion of courage that people will muster up in order to impress others. I like the fact that there is always a group of stud wannabes that finished their shift at the local Foot Action and now see themselves as club gods.

When you transition from the Foot Action guys you head straight into the dudes that have a decent job but are unsatisfied and they will tell the world that they are promoters, producers, or maybe even business owners. Those particular guys are the biggest jokes because they think they are main attractions of the evening usually those guys will try to hit on anything that moves. From the total fakes you move on to the "players."

I love when I see these guys at work because normally they are so insecure that they chose to get out of their Bentley and Rolls Royce automobiles and pay outrageous tabs that include drinks for everyone. For some reason I do not clearly understand, these guys are always either going home alone or with a girl that will only tease them all night. On the ladies side it's usually one of two things.

The ladies are usually in groups of three or four and the groups are easy to understand. Some ladies want to have a good time and chill without being bothered, some ladies want to have a sucker pay for the drinks and others are hunting for some adventure. At any right they all seem to congregate in one place and that is the floor.

I like to go to places and look at the floor because quite frankly when they all go out they all look stiff as boards and dance so horribly. I like looking at people dance because it's like watching them do a dry heave and continue. I think that the beautiful thing about people on the floor is that they all look like extras from the "Towering Inferno." There will always be the dude or girl that can really dance but again it's all a matter attention in a place where no one knows or really cares who you are because chances are that they will never see you again.
