BY MORODER

I am a huge fan of classic techno and house, it was a producer's medium. When you think back to what started certain styles you usually think of specific individuals. Soul Makossa started disco and funk and paved the way for serious studio experimentation. When you think of synthesizer driven disco and techno driven application one man comes to mind, Giorgio Morder. Moroder produced every memorable Donna Summer hit like I feel love and Love to love you baby. Moroder is someone that became known primarily for his ability to produce new robotic sounds, in stark contrast to his early bubble gum pop hits. Moroder was a singer and not someone so memorable that people would think of him as a future great.

Moroder's late 70's work coupled with his incredibly popular 80's soundtracks made him a rock star, so did his exile from music for an untold period of time. You move the clock forward some 20 years and he old man is back, commanding the respect of a new generation of DJs, and techno bands such as Daft Punk. Moroder is the king of techno, he is the guy that really started it all. Now you have a crop of shit DJs that want to put themselves in that league when what they play is crap not fit for elevators.

I was listening to work by guys with stupid names like Marcelo something or other and Van or some shit like that. To me 50 somethings that have staple clubs are nothing more than glorified losers that can't really go beyond the coke head club circuit and the extacy pill corners. Moroder is one and no one can really come close. Moroder is the original outer space DJ and I'm glad that he is here once more. I think that the Giorgio by Moroder track in the Daft Punk album is a testament to Moroder's greatness.

Long live the legend and may he continue to show everyone how it's done.

Hit the Floor

There is one thing I love about going to nightclubs and that is people watching. I think that going to a club is a wonderful exercise in seeing that small portion of courage that people will muster up in order to impress others. I like the fact that there is always a group of stud wannabes that finished their shift at the local Foot Action and now see themselves as club gods.

When you transition from the Foot Action guys you head straight into the dudes that have a decent job but are unsatisfied and they will tell the world that they are promoters, producers, or maybe even business owners. Those particular guys are the biggest jokes because they think they are main attractions of the evening usually those guys will try to hit on anything that moves. From the total fakes you move on to the "players."

I love when I see these guys at work because normally they are so insecure that they chose to get out of their Bentley and Rolls Royce automobiles and pay outrageous tabs that include drinks for everyone. For some reason I do not clearly understand, these guys are always either going home alone or with a girl that will only tease them all night. On the ladies side it's usually one of two things.

The ladies are usually in groups of three or four and the groups are easy to understand. Some ladies want to have a good time and chill without being bothered, some ladies want to have a sucker pay for the drinks and others are hunting for some adventure. At any right they all seem to congregate in one place and that is the floor.

I like to go to places and look at the floor because quite frankly when they all go out they all look stiff as boards and dance so horribly. I like looking at people dance because it's like watching them do a dry heave and continue. I think that the beautiful thing about people on the floor is that they all look like extras from the "Towering Inferno." There will always be the dude or girl that can really dance but again it's all a matter attention in a place where no one knows or really cares who you are because chances are that they will never see you again.

The Night Culture

So can you teach me how to Dougie? Will you give me some pointers on how to be a player? I guess the answer is not tonight. So what exactly makes us different at night? I think that perhaps our clothes, liquid confidence, demeanor and moves make that difference.

Every Saturday night there is a culture that builds up in every night club around America. The smoky room with the dim lights and the loud music changes everything. People dress up, they take their pay and they all go into a club. Everyone has a sort of plan, some go alone , some go in groups and most go on an expedition. If you work out the ladies will crave you, if you have a large wad of cash, they will follow you, and if you have that personality they will definitely sleep with you. This is the culture of the night and it doesn't matter what night either. So what exactly is this night culture like?

Men come into a club in groups looking for a few ladies to seduce on a specific night. There are ladies that will come in looking for an idiot to pay for their drinks and then there is the guy or gal that could not give a rat's ass. The way these groups stand apart is a simple science that's related to space and space alone. The group of "players" is not afraid to take their credit cards and pay for drinks until a lovely lady decides to say thank you or come up to the "winner's" table. There is that group of badass MMA types you just don't want to mess with. The MMA types are not actual fighters but their steroid infused bodies would make you guess otherwise. So then this is the night culture, an image we dare not disturb for our own sake.

Night culture is the escape of the very insecure and the very ignorant. There is something about the vociferous balding guy that makes you sad. There is something about the old mad that makes you cringe with shame as you watch. The night culture also has the lovely but jaded bar tender girl: the one you want to make love to, the one you want to marry, the girl of your dreams. The culture makes it impossible for you to have that girl in the bar because she is off limits to your desire. The songs start up and the world briefly changes for you.

There is that song that makes you feel like you own the place, you like to party rock and show everyone that you are sexy and you do know it. There is always some sort of song that makes everyone in the culture come together for a period of minutes. The night culture becomes predictable to all of us at some point. There is an in place in the culture and an out place in the culture of night. There are places that are in one day and out the next but in the end it's al the same in the night culture. The night culture will have the dancer, schemer, sex fiend, loner, group star, poser and jester. The night culture is a predictable and never changing friend, it only gets older.
